A human milk bank or breast milk bank is a service which collects, screens, processes and dispenses by prescription human milk donated by nursing mothers who are not biologically related to the recipient infant.
Dr. H. Gordon Roberts hospital has a dedicated human milk bank which is fully operational and for the benefit of the patients at the hospital and for other cases, if required. Babies born pre-term who are at a higher risk of developing diseases, babies with mothers with postpartum illnesses, and babies whose mothers have lactation failure are recipients for the milk bank. Human milk banks play an important role providing milk to babies who otherwise would not be able to receive human milk.
