Rural Health Centre, Mawphlang

As early as 1946 the hospital was concerned with bringing healthcare to those who could not come to the hospital. Most of the deaths and diseases in the villages were preventable and so began the travelling dispensary in 1947 which ultimately led to the creation of the Rural Health Centres.

The dispensary would go to villages on market days and offer healthcare services to the people who needed it. This was a fully charitable mission which was given life due to the generosity of the donors.

On seeing how much the villagers benefited from the travelling dispensary Dr. R A Hughes proposed setting up Rural Health Centres. Thus began the work of establishing a Rural Health Centre at Mawphlang.

The centre at Mawphlang was inaugurated in 1965 and made use of the nurses trained at the hospital. It provided a clinic set-up with the following activities:

  1. Community Health Service and Public Health Education
  2. Maternity and Child Welfare Service
  3. School Health Programme
  4. Immunisation Programme
  5. Home Visits
  6. Family Planning

The centre would go on to become a staple of the daily lives of the villagers at Mawphlang and the surrounding areas. Owing to the influx of patients much time and effort has been spent in equipping the centres to fully realise the needs of the people there.
